Politics and real life have impact on cooking magazine

The industrial development and great standard of living in most western nations has not been without its down side. As people have advanced from performing mainly labour related work activities to the increasingly cerebral demands of the modern work place, the health of many people has fallen to unacceptable levels. Obesity is an excellent example of a preventable condition that has increased in the modern age due largely to a decrease in exercise and an increase in the consumption of unhealthy foods. These issues have impacted the health systems in many nations to a point where governments have intervened.

The increasing richness of the living conditions in many countries has brought them to a point where the political system has been forced to become involved in the health and diet of its citizens.

Most modern nations have a health system that is at least partially funded by its taxpayers. Any increases in health expenditure due to preventable conditions are therefore of immediate concern to the politicians who are elected to manage the health system. There are many different measures that a government can take to try and influence the health of its citizens. Most of these measures are related to public awareness and take the form of advertising campaigns on accessible media such as magazines and television. A cooking magazine is the perfect place to run a campaign relating to diet practices, as is a TV commercial on a public network. Many campaigns initiated by politicians have memorable catch phrases such as the 5 a day message relating to the amount of fruit and vegetables to eat per day.

Some governments have even gone to the trouble of publishing a cookery book that promotes healthy eating practices. Cooking books and magazines make for great birthday and christmas presents, allowing the healthy food messages generated by the health system to circulate very well at times of holiday and vacation. During such periods where people are likely to increase their intake of high fat foods, it is even more important to get the healthy diet message out there to the masses. The last few years has seen a revival of healthy cooking and eating among the general population, perhaps as a backlash to the increasing obesity and laziness of modern society. Perhaps the politicians responsible for recent healthy eating campaigns have also had an impact on improving our collective relationship to food.
